Choose from over a million free wallpapers from the Steam Workshop with new wallpapers being uploaded every day! Can’t find a wallpaper that fits your mood? Let your imagination go wild by using the Wallpaper Engine Editor to create your own animated wallpapers from images, videos, websites or applications. A large selection of presets and effects allow you to animate your own images and share them on the Steam Workshop or to just use them for yourself. If you look at the most played “games” on Steam, you’ll probably know most of the top 25. But just outside of that, with more “players” than Elder Scrolls Online, Arma 3, Skyrim and Fallout 4, is … a game about wallpapers. To be clear, Wallpaper Engine isn’t a game. It’s a utility that lets you animate your desktop wallpaper, changing up the plain stillshots of Windows waves with 2D and 3D animations, rolling videos, sites that refresh in real time, and even apps. It works across multiple monitors and supports standard and ultrawide screen resolutions, and there’s a Steam Workshop where you for user-uploaded backgrounds. But because most of Wallpaper Engine is backgrounds that people upload themselves, the Steam Workshop is weeb haven. There’s sorting categories for “mature” and “questionable”, which I refused to browse through on a 32-inch monitor at work. And to the surprise of no-one, users have complained about straight up porn — not halfway tentative anime porn, but actual legitimate porn — being uploaded to the Steam Workshop.

Bring your desktop wallpapers alive with realtime graphics, videos, applications or websites.

Generally though, Wallpaper Engine‘s functionality and its growing roster of stuff to add to your desktop is why it’s so beloved. The $5.99 program has a 97 percent user rating from just over 83,000 reviews, with users loving the customisation, the discovery process, and in particular the ability to bring their desktop to life with new memes and waifu bait. Critical reviews complained about increased CPU and GPU usage in some instances, a lack of content at certain widescreen resolutions, as well as inconvenient crashes in various scenarios. Here’s the wonderful tales that users have left about their time with Wallpaper Engine, a Steam program more popular than Fallout 4 and Skyrim. As someone who regularly makes time to browse the collection of insanely clean setups on r/Battlestations, I’m always looking for ways to improve my own. You can spend hours cleaning and tirelessly cable managing your desk, but even the swankiest peripherals can be let down by a mediocre wallpaper. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Ultrawide monitor owners will know this struggle all too well. It’s a true challenge to find a 3440×1440 wallpaper that isn’t just a pretty landscape shot. For months I’ve stuck with the same wallpaper, simply because it took so long to find one that I actually liked. After much deliberation, I then spent another half an hour tweaking my Corsair iCUE settings to complement the blue and white tones of my wallpaper. It’s a lot of effort for something that really shouldn’t take long at all. While this kind of customisation hell is self-inflicted, it’s relieving to learn that Wallpaper Engine Team has encountered the same problems, and has created software to make this ordeal much less of a headache. Wallpaper Engine eliminates the monotony of static backdrops by letting you use live wallpapers on your Windows desktop. Linked to the Steam Workshop, it enables you to download animated wallpapers created and shared by the Steam community. The library features creations that span games, sports, animals, and even memes. If you feel inspired by some of the concepts you can even create your own wallpapers using the Wallpaper Engine editor.

Use animated screensavers while you are away from your computer.

Wallpaper Engine supports a wide range of resolutions, and lets you filter by them. Some wallpapers include support for Razer Chroma and Corsair iCUE, to illuminate your moody gaming setup with stylish colour-coordinated accents. While this isn’t available for every wallpaper, it’s clearly marked to make your selection easier. I’ve recently transformed my monitor into a colourful tank for the ‘Sea Monster’ which bobs around blowing bubbles in harmony with my pink and blue fans. You need to enable the software on startup so that it kicks into action soon after your PC boots. Constantly running a live wallpaper in the background is not taxing on your system, and Wallpaper Engine tries to use as few system resources as possible. The animated wallpapers will also pause when you’re playing games to avoid knocks to performance. Having used it for a few weeks now, I haven’t experienced anything to suggest that it’s negatively impacting my system when playing games. Call of Duty

Wallpaper Engine is an early access application on Steam that enables you to create, display, and share customer static and animated wallpapers. I stumbled upon Wallpaper Engine while browsing the top sellers on Steam. The app was listed there next to games, and that got me interested as it takes quite a bit of sales to be featured there. First of all, Wallpaper Engine is not free. It is available for $3.99 as an early access title. The application works really well for early access software, and all core functionality is already there. The app ships with wallpapers, and support for the Steam workshop. There you find thousands of wallpapers created by users of the app. The majority of those are free, while some are available for a price.

Personalize animated wallpapers with your favorite colors.

Use interactive wallpapers that can be controlled with your mouse. Many aspect ratios and native resolutions supported including 16:9, 21:9, 16:10, 4:3. Multi monitor environments are supported. Wallpapers will pause while playing games to save performance. Create your own animated wallpapers in the Wallpaper Engine Editor. Animate new live wallpapers from basic images or import HTML or video files for the wallpaper. Use the Steam Workshop to share and download wallpapers for free. Preview any wallpaper by selecting it. This opens a larger preview of it, and several properties that you may adjust. This includes, usually, the playback rate, and colors. You may use the remove wallpaper, ok and cancel buttons to apply or remove wallpapers from the desktop background again. Animated wallpapers on the desktop are not nothing new, Microsoft introduced the feature as one of the few extras for Windows Vista Ultimate, and programs like VLC or Desktop Movie support it as well. One core difference to that is that Wallpaper Engine supports more than just playing an animation, usually in form of a video. It supports 2D, 3D, HTML5, JavaScript, WebGL, application, and video wallpapers. The teaser trailer embedded above highlights some of that. It shows a wallpaper that visualizes the music that is playing on the system, a wallpaper with game elements, and other forms of direct interaction with the wallpaper. You can check out all available wallpapers on the apps’ Steam Workshop page. The app supports multi-monitor environments, and different aspect ratios and resolutions. Also worth noting is that it won’t modify any system files for its functionality.Call of Duty Black Ops II

It will pause wallpapers automatically when games are played on Steam, and you may run any app or game in parallel with the software as well. Performance depends largely on the selected wallpaper and type. It should be clear what application and website wallpapers will use more resources than lighter 2D or video based wallpapers that don’t support interaction with the wallpaper. You may switch between different quality levels in the settings, and modify a lot of quality related settings there manually as well. The app uses a surprisingly low amount of RAM. It used about 11 Megabytes of RAM when I loaded an animated wallpaper called universe, and 12 Megabytes when I loaded the one called Techno. The interactive game wallpaper Sheep on the other hand required more than 60 Megabytes of RAM. Wallpapers remain open only for as long as the Wallpaper Engine software runs. When you close it, the wallpaper is closed with it. Wallpaper Engine is a fantastic application for users and creators alike. As a user, you get to choose between thousands of wallpaper images, many of them animated or interactive. You can also create basic wallpapers quickly using the built-in editor.
