This, much like the 3DS version which released back in 2017, is a more console-friendly version that strips away some important aspects which avid users of the software may consider essential. There are no plugins here to make life easier or introduce streamlined ways of going about your creative business, no way to freely integrate your own custom music, sprites or other graphical elements and no option to export and sell your elaborate creations once you’re done. This is a much more contained and restricted beast. However, if you can make peace with these exclusions and get to grips with a UI that’s certainly slower and more clumsy than on PC, you’ll find a game that provides for unlimited creative pleasure within its console-specific confines. There is a tutorial here that walks you through a few basics upon first launching into the game, but it really does feel as though it’s in a huge hurry to push you out the door and into the program proper as soon as it possibly can. What’s offered here feels like the bare minimum in terms of direction and you’d better pay very close attention because there’s no way – at least we couldn’t find one – to return to this tutorial once it’s done and the game has no help section to speak of. In one way, this is a disappointment; we’d love to have had a lot more of the in-and-outs explained to us, but, in another, it’s a grounding dose of reality for anyone who’s genuinely planning on spending time creating the RPG of their dreams. You’ll be tasked with adding some scenery to a map, giving an NPC character a simple movement ruleset and dialogue as well as defining an enemy’s health and attack parameters in a quick turn-based battle scenario. You’ll also be introduced to the game’s layering system that divides elements of scenery into separate sections that sit on top of one another as you build your game’s environments.
It may sound like plenty
but it’s all over before you know it, and there’s absolutely no doubt that if you’re in this one for the long haul you’ll need to avail of the RPG Maker MV forums, enthusiast sites and the myriad YouTube tutorials and help guides that will no doubt spring up in the days and weeks following release. Another key aspect in getting to grips with the deep systems at your disposal in RPG Maker MV will be the work of other users. Simply search for a game here and you’ll be presented with efforts sorted into new arrivals, daily and monthly top fives and most highly-rated. It’s a slow and methodical experience for sure and one that, unfortunately, is made just that little bit slower on Switch by a UI that can be quite clunky and sometimes really struggles to keep up with what you’re doing. Touchscreen controls help things somewhat here but, overall, we found that menus pause and stall quite frequently – sometimes for up to a minute – as the game processes what you’re doing and it really is a bit of a pain that a process that’s already quite slow is exacerbated by the game trying to keep up. Typing in dialogue can thankfully be sped up by plugging a keyboard into your Switch – we tried to hook a mouse up to navigate menus but as yet this isn’t supported – but you’re going to have to make peace with the fact things take time here. If you’re seriously considering jumping into RPG Maker MV on Switch you may also want to consider checking out the RPG Maker MV Player, a free platform releasing alongside the game, that’s available and accessible to all Switch owners, regardless of whether or not they own the main game. Choose a project name and title, pick a save block, and instantly be given access to a vast array of pre-built tilesets and a brilliant, easy-to-use sprite maker. The main edit screen features the map editor, with three windows and a toolbar. One window is the Map List, a cascading list of the project’s maps, to easily select between each level of your vast and growing world. Then there is Tile Palette window for the currently selected tileset, which provides all the game’s assets like trees, mountains, paths, beds, even toilets! For example, it opens up the Database, the Event Editor, the music manager called “Sound Test,” and the very engaging Character Creator, all of which require their own windows and dialogue boxes. The menu system is fairly straightforward, but navigating it takes some patience and practice. The depth of functionality that is layered in those menus can be overwhelming, but once you understand and familiarize yourself with the workflow, you will find there is so much that you can create and do. You begin your journey with a black screen and mother calling out, “Wake up! Wake up!” Classic! Wait, this isn’t supposed to be a game. What’s going on? Oh. I see—a lengthy tutorial…in RPG-form. Well, it can’t be too bad. Two naps and half a pizza later, I give up and shut off the tutorial. I’ve waited long enough! I want to start creating stuff! if you don’t save it properly— and I didn’t— you will lose all progress and have to begin again. And beginning again is nigh impossible. There really is no easy way to find the tutorial again if you did not finish it. With no base game or main campaign (other than the tutorial), the story in MV will be whatever the community creates. You literally start with a blank slate. Every game submitted by users can be filtered with tags and ratings, ideally keeping the naughty ones and pranky ones at the bottom of the list and letting the Switch community choose which should rise to the top. This is important because EVERY submission is available on the Maker Forum! It will be interesting to see how quickly this fills up, and which projects draw the most downloads. A very real concern is how to enjoy these original games for players who can’t afford MV, or who have no intention of using it to create games. In other words, is there a way to just play the games without owning MV? Yes! Enter the RPG Maker MV Player. This is a FREE digital download that provides all necessary software to run one of the games in the Maker Forum. NIS America released a similar app for the 3DS with the FES release, but the version for the Switch is much more user-friendly. The purpose of the Player is to make the myriad user-generated content readily available to the entire world. If one of the games a player wants to try out required a DLC in its creations, the RPG Maker MV Player automatically provides the assets without the need for a purchase. Some might call the graphics featured in this maker “retro,” but that’s complicated label. The style for all the base assets is classic JRPG top-down tiling. But, since this particular style existed in the 8-bit era (ie. the original Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior I-III), was brought greater attention in the 16-bit SNES era (like Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire), and then all but disappeared with the N64 and GameCube, it’s easy to misinterpret how advanced the newer sprite-based games are.
For MV, the default sprite generator is actually 32-bit, as it provides unlimited colors and alpha-blending. The tilesets are pixel-based with the same array of color options. But both can be “hand-drawn,” or fine-tuned via direct manipulation to appear more like their retro 8- and 16-bit ancestors. In contrast, splash art, enemy art, and character “face” art may include higher quality pixel-based images, like JPEGs. Used in tandem with the sprites, the more detailed images will make your game look cutting edge. Or, at very least, something more in line with JRPGs in the last decade. The choice is up to the creator. That is, RPG Maker MV is a choose-your-own-aesthetic.Note that despite the amount of assets available (twice as much as the PC release!), there is, unfortunately, no way to import a JPEG or homemade tileset. Everything has to be created within the framework of MV using the tools the developers provide. So, no using images of your favorite waifu, or “borrowing” tilesets from Deviantart- it’s all gotta be original, or as original as the MV tools and your imagination will allow. This drawback is actually a blessing as the creation process seems to be a long, patient, rather overwhelming journey, and I find that anything that narrows the list of resources I can use helps me zero in on my goals.

- Open the Start menu (Windows ‘flag’ button) in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- At the bottom of the Start menu, type Folder Options into the Search box, then press the Enter key.
- Click on the View tab at the top of the Folder Options window and check the option to Show hidden files and folders (in Windows 11, this option is called Show hidden files, folders, and drives).
- Click Apply then OK.
- Return to the Start menu and select Computer, then double click Local Disk (C:), and then open the Program Files folder. On some systems, this folder is called ‘Program Files(x86)’.
- In the Program Files folder, find and open the folder for your game.
- In the game’s folder, locate the executable (.exe) file for the game–this is a faded icon with the game’s title.
- Right-click on this file, select Properties, and then click the Compatibility tab at the top of the Properties window.
- Check the Run this program as an administrator box in the Privilege Level section. Click Apply then OK.
- Once complete, try opening the game again
NOTE: PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE LATEST VERSION OF YUZU EMULATOR FROM SOME GAMES YOU MAY NEED RYUJINX EMULATOR
- First you will need YUZU Emulator. Download it from either UNFITGIRL, .. Open it in WinRar, 7ZIP idk and then move the contents in a folder and open the yuzu.exe.
- There click Emulation -> Configure -> System -> Profile Then press on Add and make a new profile, then close yuzu
Inside of yuzu click File -> Open yuzu folder. This will open the yuzu configuration folder inside of explorer.
- Create a folder called “keys” and copy the key you got from here and paste it in the folder.
- For settings open yuzu up Emulation -> Configure -> Graphics, Select OpenGL and set it to Vulkan or OpenGL. (Vulkan seems to be a bit bad atm) Then go to Controls and press Single Player and set it to custom
- Then Press Configure and set Player 1 to Pro Controller if you have a controller/keyboard and to Joycons if Joycons. Press Configure and press the exact buttons on your controller After you’re done press Okay and continue to the next step.
- Download any ROM you want from UNFITGIRL, .. After you got your File (can be .xci or .nsp) create a folder somewhere on your PC and in that folder create another folder for your game.
- After that double-click into yuzu and select the folder you put your game folder in.
- Lastly double click on the game and enjoy it.
