In October 2021, Guardians of the Night -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles was released , a game based on one of the most successful animes of recent years and developed by CyberConnect2, the Japanese studio responsible for Asura’s Wrath, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, among many others. The Kimetsu no Yaiba video game follows the line of the latter, since it adapts the animated series in the form of a fighting game, allowing us to relive the most epic confrontations by controlling the different characters. In addition, and as a novelty, exploration phases were included. At its launch, Night Watchmen -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles came to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC , skipping the hybrid console. In summary, we can tell you that visually it is the best adaptation of an anime in video game format . Kimetsu no Yaiba (the series) stands out for the enormous quality of its animation and in CyberConnect2 they managed to recreate the most iconic scenes with such fidelity that it is almost impossible to differentiate between anime and video game . At a playable level, however, we find the title somewhat simple, even more so than Ultimate Ninja Storm . Fighting games usually stand out for their depth, but in Kimetsu no Yaiba the options at our disposal are very limited and the differences between characters almost non-existent. It is a game that lives more from the show than from the gameplay . The exploration phases, on the other hand, seemed like a waste to us , as they just drop us into flat design scenarios to walk paths in search of indicators before moving on to the next fight. They are by far the worst aspect of the game. And speaking of characters, given that the story covers only the first part of the anime and the movie Infinity Train, the game launched with a fairly sparse roster. Fortunately, over time new fighters have been added for free , mainly the enemy demons (it is incomprehensible that they were not released). The Nintendo Switch version includes these extra characters as a base, which makes the squad more competent . Although being so limited at the plot level means that it remains a fairly sparse game in terms of content. Finally, note that the soundtrack used is the same as that of the anime (unfortunately this is not usual), enhanced with its magnificent melodies the most epic and emotional moments. A kick.

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles Switch visuals and performance

And now yes, let’s talk about the Nintendo Switch version of Guardians of the Night -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles . If you’ve played any of the CyberConnect2 Naruto games that have been released on the hybrid console, you’ll already know that they’ve all been great adaptations of the versions for the other consoles. And we can confirm that it has also been the case with the Kimetsu no Yaiba video game and we are facing a fantastic version that has little to envy the rest . The only minor aspects are resolution and framerate; The latter must be specified, since the only versions that reach 60 are those of PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC (through a patch that arrived after launch). In this way, the Nintendo Switch version of Kimetsu no Yaiba only differs from the PS4 and Xbox One versions in resolution. There may also be some graphic effect with reduced quality, but the difference would only be noticeable if we put the versions side by side and compare with a magnifying glass. But otherwise, the game looks and sounds the same, while maintaining that high level of entertainment for which it is known. Also, being able to play it on a laptop and take the fights anywhere (including local co-op) is always a plus. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond Switch NSP

In short, the Nintendo Switch version of the Kimetsu no Yaiba video game is great . If you feared that the hybrid console was not up to the task and you have been waiting to make a decision, we can assure you that you will enjoy the game in the same way and you will not miss a thing.Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles from CyberConnect2 and Aniples debuted last year on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam through Sega in the West, and it has now arrived on Nintendo’s hybrid console. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is a gorgeous arena fighter that I enjoyed playing quite a bit on Xbox Series X and Steam following its release online and offline. Since that launch, it has gotten many free content updates and improvements bringing in new characters, 60fps support on current generation platforms, and more. For my Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles Switch review, I will be covering the quality of the port, how it compares to current platforms, and how it feels compared to the game on Steam Deck.Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles on Nintendo Switch features all the content included in the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC versions of the game with the post-launch update content also included from day one. The difference is that you will need to defeat specific characters in the story to unlock them versus them being unlocked through updates in the prior release. This is the full game with a few bonus DLC packs included for all owners of the Switch version like additional Kimetsu Points and unlock keys.

Levels

enjoyed my time with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles on prior platforms, and still play the online with a friend on PC on and off. The story mode was fun after a few updates, and CyberConnect2 is the best developer for anime-styled visuals alongside Arc System Works. Just like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, I was hoping the Nintendo Switch port of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles would be competent. Thankfully, it is a great port. Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles Switch visuals and performanceI wasn’t sure what to expect with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles on Nintendo Switch before booting up the game because anime games on Switch either end up being sub-par like One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 with its many technical issues, or great ones like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot on Switch with the expected compromises made to have it look and feel good on Nintendo’s hybrid system. I didn’t play Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles on the original Switch or the Lite. I did all my testing on the OLED model, and it looks gorgeous in handheld mode. The animations, particle effects, and character models all shine on the display. The screenshot comparison above (zoomed) shows some of the differences going from handheld (left) to docked (right) in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles. Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles Switch vs PS5 and Xbox Series X Barring the drop in resolution compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions I have, there are also other cutbacks like some post-processing effects, foliage density, but mainly draw distance. This was the most noticeable downgrade compared to other versions of the game. In story mode, the foliage and some objects pop into view near you, while others load in further away. The screenshot comparison below showcases how an in-engine cut-scene on PS5 (left) and Switch docked (right) compare. While the PS5 and Xbox Series X have 60fps support in some modes, the Switch just like last generation systems has no frame rate option. The series has developed a lot of traction over the past few years, culminating in a massive movie that blew the doors off the Japanese box office and even did well internationally. This particular game covers the beginning of Tanjiro’s journey, in the events of the movie. And like many previous CyberConnect2 projects, it’s a fighting game with a story mode and a limited versus mode. You know what it is. What jumps out about The Hinokami Chronicles is how fantastic it looks, but that’s CyberConnect2 for you. Some scenes are pulled directly from the anime, particularly the ending animations, and they look too decent in this case on the Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay

Combat is very basic and easy to learn. There are light attacks (which serve as the main dial-a-combo), dashes, an ability button (which is basically a Smash special attack that is modified with directional inputs), grabs, guards, boosts (boosting up meters like DBZ ), a dedicated button for popping ultimates, and a support skill button Taking cover, parrying, and running are key elements of the system and keep it from becoming a button-mashing affair. While the roster is extremely limited, the characters that are present are unique enough to justify their existence and add more diversity to the cast. Coupled with the vibrant visual style, it’s easy to be dazzled by all the animations and want to try out new characters to see what they can bring to the table. Useful combat, in this case, is fine. “The story features some exploration elements and is told through various cutscenes and boss battles with demons seen in the anime series. However, we see a lot of interaction in the game as you have to complete missions in order to reach the objectives, which in this case are the demons that we have previously seen in the anime. The events of Demon Slayer are often rushed, to the point where you miss out on some crucial bits of character development or some meaty narrative elements.

The bosses are the bright spots and offer the same dramatic anime action twists the series is known for, but this time you get to play them. Bosses often sport multiple phases/forms, along with voice acting that ramps up battles big time and makes them come alive. There are also a lot of major character moments, even with the bosses; a stark contrast to the very static and repetitive versus mode. Now we get to Versus mode even at best with a few unlocks it’s very simple. Many of the characters are really just alternate costume versions, and in classic anime brawler/wrestler style, there are clones of the hero. Part of the problem is that versus is intrinsically tied to the story mode and Kimetsu Points unlock system. Presented as a quasi-Fortnite season pass, you will unlock points and purchase rewards. Every time I took a break from the campaign to try out the versus mode, I would get a bit bored and then jump right back in. The 2v2 concept is fun though, and if you have a training partner, you’ll get a lot more mileage out of The Hinokami Chronicles. On Nintendo Switch I can say that it has a decent execution, frames are lost at times, but nothing serious. I can say that the experience is a bit lost in the graphic section, it is not as rewarding as on other consoles. Plants vs Zombies Battle for Neighborville Switch Complete Edition NSP

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is another decent fighting adaptation that requires you to already have a little experience of the source material to truly enjoy it. In that sense, it joins a very crowded space of many other previous anime games, and many of you know where you stand in these. Now that I have a Steam Deck, I’ve been including it in comparisons and reviews. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is verified on Steam Deck by Valve, and it runs perfectly in my testing. While the display is obviously not as nice as the Switch’s OLED one, the game looks and runs a lot better with locked 60fps performance in the modes that support it with higher image quality. I could even set it to 30fps and go above the native 800p display for downsampling on Steam Deck. If you have the option, it plays and feels a lot better on Steam Deck than Nintendo Switch thanks to the PC port being great, but the Switch version is an excellent way to experience this game. If you held off on buying Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles on other platforms so far to play it on Nintendo Switch portable, it is an easy recommendation. I’ve enjoyed replaying it on Switch, and hope CyberConnect2 continues to bring quality anime game ports to the platform in the future. I would recommend against getting it docked if you have access to a more powerful console though. The load times and image quality are a lot better on not just PS5 but also PS4 Pro compared to Switch docked. As it stands, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is a great experience on every platform I’ve tested it on and those who waited for a competent portable version on Switch will enjoy experiencing the story on the go. Switch port review: This review focusses on the Nintendo Switch version and port quality of a game that was either previously released on other platforms or one that simultaneously launched on Nintendo Switch and other platforms.
